Joan was born in Scranton, PA to Margaret and Robert O’Donnell on June 22, 1937. She attended West Scranton high school, graduating in 1955. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing practicing in fields of psychiatric, senior care, and OBGYN. Joan retired from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC as charge nurse of OBGYN after nearly thirteen years of service. Her love for nursing was parallel with the love she had for her family. Among many other things that brought pleasure to her life, she particularly enjoyed gardening, reading, dancing, music, spending time with family, and gathering with friends. She truly will be missed and will live within our hearts forever.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margaret O’Donnell; her grandmother, Mrs. Florence O’Donnell.
Joan is survived by her husband James Horton of Southport; sons James Jr., Paul, and Timothy; daughter Kathleen; four grandchildren Corinne, Michael, Jacob, and Reynolds; brothers Robert and John O’Donnell and their respective families.
A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5269 Dosher Cutoff, Southport, NC at 2:00pm November 7, 2017 with inurnment in the church columbarium.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, November 6, 2017 at Peacock, Newman, & White Funeral Home, 1411 North Howe St. Southport, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
