Janie Risch Fortney passed away peacefully at home in Southport, NC after an 8-year battle with lung cancer. Her courage, optimism, and dependence on prayer, along with family support and excellent medical care carried her through her final journey.
Janie was born in Logan, Ohio on May 19, 1938, and she graduated from Logan High School and Duke University School of Nursing. She worked her early years at Duke Hospital in Oncology and Obstetrics. Janie and her husband, Sid lived In Concord, NC for 25 years raising their family. She served as the founding director of the Cabarrus County Crisis Pregnancy Center. Janie was a wonderful mother that insured that all of her children had a strong Christian foundation.
As a passionate Christian, Janie spent many years in medical missions as a nurse and pharmacist, accompanying her husband to Africa, South America, and Haiti. While serving in Haiti for 5 years at the Hospital of Light, she developed many friendships and a love for the Haitian people. Janie continued to support Haiti-based Christian missionaries and individuals in need for over twenty years after returning to the U.S.
Janie was an ardent student of the Bible and participated in several Bible studies, the latest being the Southport Community Bible Study. Janie had a profound love of Jesus, an ever-positive disposition, and she deeply loved her family and her friends. She kept journals which were full of prayers and concerns for her family, friends, and acquaintances here and abroad. If you knew Janie, you have been prayed for.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Lester Risch and Quinette Shaw Risch of Logan, Ohio. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Sidney R. Fortney; her sister Carol Kelch and brother-in-law, Dr. Harold Kelch; along with 6 children, Dr. C.T. Moorman, III and wife Lynne of Charlotte, NC, Pam Moorman Beecher and her husband Scott of Concord, NC, Mr. David S. Fortney and wife Janet of Winston Salem, NC, Lauren Fortney Bryan and husband John of Raleigh, NC, Mr. Thomas O. Moorman and wife Debra of Wake Forest, NC, Mr. Lester R. Fortney and wife Jennifer of Austin, TX; and 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 14, 2024 at six o'clock in the evening at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport, North Carolina. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from five o'clock until six o'clock.
A reception for family and friends will occur Saturday, November 16, 2024 from nine-thirty in the morning until eleven-thirty in the morning to at West Cabarrus Church, 7655 Bruton Smith Blvd., Concord, NC 28027. Burial will follow at twelve-thirty in the afternoon at Carolina Memorial Park, 601 Mt. Olivet Road, Concord, North Carolina 28025.
