Mrs. O’Daniel was born June 9, 1930 in Brunswick County, the daughter of the late Charles Henry Swan and Ella Lee Russ Swan. She was the first baby born at J. Arthur Dosher Hospital in June 1930. She was preceded in death by her two sisters Marie Swan Royal, and Janice Holden. Doris was known for her sense of style and fun, and was considered by many to be a true southern belle. She was the first Live Oak Festival Queen. This festival later became known as the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival. During Doris’ early career she worked at Dosher Hospital. In the 1960’s she and her husband John D. O’Daniel moved to Panama. Doris returned to Southport in 1973 and subsequently attended floral design school in Florida. Additionally, her career included working at the Brunswick County Tax Department, and the NCDOT in the NC Ferry System.
Surviving are two nephews, Michael Royal (Kim) of Austin, TX, and Dean Holden of Southport; and a niece Annelle Royal (Angie) of Southport.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 30, 2015 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles A. Drew officiating. Burial will follow in the Northwood Cemetery.
