Michael Moriarty, 78, of Southington, loving husband and best friend for 59 years of Ruth (Reibold) Moriarty, passed away on Monday (August 18, 2014). Born in Waterbury on February 18, 1936, he was the son of the late Maurice and Nora (King) Moriarty. Michael, a Sacred Heart High School alumnus, went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Financial Accounting at the University of New Haven and proudly served as employee of the Northeast Utilities Service Company for 38 years. He retired in 1993 as Senior Analyst in the Operations Staff Services Group. After retiring, Michael earned his real estate broker license and was subsequently associated with Prudential Connecticut Realty for 7 years.
As a former member of the Southington Finance Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Republican Town Committee, and the Spring Lake Village Condo 8 Association, Michael was always very actively involved in his community. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family, to whom he was a consistently pleasant and friendly companion. He made a habit of reaching out to all those around him, always ready to chat about the day’s news, review the highlights of last night’s big game, or debate the latest hot political topic - all with an unmatched tolerance for even the most wildly radical opinions and views. He was an avid golfer and looked forward each year to spending the winter months in South Carolina with his wife and friends. His grandchildren were a special joy to him. Michael took a keen interest in their activities, encouraging them in whatever life endeavors they chose to pursue with an open-mindedness that only comes along with the great spirit of a true gentleman.
Michael is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Southington; his brother-in-law, Art Lanese, of Wolcott; his five children, Kathleen Pinkerton and her husband John of New Harbor, Maine, Nancy Galvin and her husband Ray of Bristol, Michael Moriarty and his wife Clara of Southington, Eileen Yegerman and her husband Rip of West Chazy, New York, and Susan Skarzynski and her husband Rich of Southington; fourteen grandchildren, Patrick, Kerry, Melissa, Breanne, Shannon, Caitlin, Rory, Kevin, Meaghan, Shoshana, Cailey, Aaron, Zack, and Julia; two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Julia; several cousins and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sheila Lanese.
