She was born March 17, 1937 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was the daughter of the late Charles R. K, and M. Blanche (MacLean) Allen. Her elder sister Margaret predeceased her. She was proud of her Canadian heritage and never gave up her citizenship.
Janet was the Director of Counseling and Career Services at Quinnipiac University until she retired in 2002 and was an advocate for higher education for everyone. She spent her life like her mother before her fighting for civil rights, feminism, equal rights for the LGBTQ+ and disabled community and also fought for cruelty against animals.
She is survived by her daughter, Noel G. Coonce of Hartford and her grandchildren Duncan and Bear Coonce-Ewing. She also leaves a nephew Bruce Menchions and his wife Joanne of Ancaster, ON; a niece Jessica Barry and her husband George of Ottawa, ON and a brother-in-law, Bill Menchions of FL. Janet was predeceased by her son Ian A. Coonce in 1993 and a niece Pamela Menchions.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3rd at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 145 Main St., Southington. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington has been entrusted with the arrangements.
