Edward Francis Meehan, Sr., 80, of Southington died suddenly on January 6th, 2009 while en route to Florida with his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Kathleen “Kay” (Fitzgerald) Meehan. Ed was born on September 13th, 1928 in Waterbury, CT, the third of five children of Joseph and Mary (Brennan) Meehan. Growing up, he learned to value family, hard work, and above all else, faith in God. He graduated from Crosby High School and from Fordham University in 1951 with a degree in pharmacy. After graduation, Ed began working as a chemist at the Naugatuck Chemical Company and as a pharmacist at Della Pietra’s Pharmacy in Waterbury. In 1962, he opened his own store, East Mountain Pharmacy where he worked diligently for the next twenty years. In 1982, he closed the store and began working as a pharmacist at several sites for the State of Connecticut. He retired in 1992.
Ed and Kay Meehan were married on January 23th, 1954 and lived most of their married lives in the east end of Waterbury. Together, they lovingly raised four sons, Tom, Ned, Martin, and John. After retiring, they began to spend their winters in Florida, settling in Fort Meyers seven years ago. In 2001, they moved to Southington, close to their oldest son, Tom and his family. Ed’s greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family and he quietly provided them with support, encouragement, advice, and unconditional love. In retirement, he and Kay happily filled their days at sporting and extra-curricular events of their ten grand-children. Five years ago, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by extended family and friends and, this past summer, they jointly celebrated their 80th birthdays.
Ed was a long-time communicant of SS Peter and Paul Church in Waterbury and, after moving to Southington, of St. Domenic’s Church. He was a member of the Elks Club for many years and thoroughly enjoyed their golf and bowling leagues. In addition, he was an avid exerciser and he loved to read and travel with his family.
Besides his wife, Kay, Ed leaves his four sons and their wives, Dr. Thomas P. Meehan and his wife, Rachel of Southington, Edward “Ned” F. Meehan, Jr. and his wife, Alane of Brookfield, Martin J. Meehan and his wife, Maria of Bristol, and John F. Meehan and his wife, Marlana of Bogart, GA. He also leaves ten adoring grand-children, Katie, TJ, Maggie, Vicky, Kate, Diane, Adam, Jeff, Kiersten, and Keven Meehan. His surviving siblings include Mary Berry, Eloise Gunnoud, and George Meehan. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his older brother, Joseph Meehan. All of Ed’s family are heartbroken that he is gone but feel blessed and privileged to have had him in their lives. He will remain their hero, role model, and inspiration and someday, they look forward to being together again.
