The life journey of Bernice Catherine Hudson, age 88, ended peacefully on November 19, 2024, in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Bernice was born at home in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 1, 1936, to the late Ernest Smelser and the late Millicent Smelser (Peters). She graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1954.
After high school Bernice became a Bookkeeper for Olin Mathieson. While employed at Olin Mathieson her path crossed with Herb, who eventually became her husband. Bernice and Herb relocated to Southampton, Bucks County and Bernice settled into her role of Homemaker for their growing family. They raised their family in a neighborhood full of other young families who quickly became not only life-long friends, but family. Holiday parties, couples bridge nights, fun times at Maplewood Swim Club and neighborhood celebrations provided many memorable good times. After Herb’s passing, she resided in Warminster for the remainder of her life.
Bernice was active in various charitable Auxiliary organizations, foremost being St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The monthly Ladies Bridge Group and many Holiday Bazaars were a large part of the fundraising efforts. Along with playing cards, Bernice’s other interests were spending time with her friends and family, gardening, travel and music. Bernice’s love of music has been passed down to her extended family She enjoyed many genres and her favorites spanned many decades. She also enjoyed going to see live concerts and musicals with her daughters providing many wonderful memories.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Millicent, as well as her siblings Ernest Jr., David "Bud", Robert "Bobby", Jean Lane, Charles, and Thomas, as well as her sister-in-laws, Margaret, Charlene, and Mary on the Smelser side. On the Hudson side, Bernice is preceded in death by her brother-in-law Warren and her sister-in-law Mildred and their daughter-in-law Joyce. Her husband, Herbert Horace Hudson, passed away in 1997.
Bernice is survived by her sister, Lois McCann and brother-in-law, Tom "Tee" McCann and nephew Warren "Butch" Hudson. Also survived by her loving daughters Lisa Hudson Swider, Leslie McHugh (David), Laura Hudson (Scott). She will be missed by her seven grandchildren, William Stump (Erika), Rebecca Stump, Regan Stump, Andrew McHugh (Claire), Sarah McHugh (Eli), Dean Woodrow and Matthew Woodrow.
A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 10:30 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 am, at the Chapel at Ann’s Choice located at 30000 Ann’s Choice Way, Warminster, PA 18974.
