Janet Horan Ouellette, 90, of Dartmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Horan, DDS and the late James Edward Ouellette.
Born in Nashua, NH, a daughter of the late Herbert Eugene Dolloff and E. Madeline (Holden) Dolloff, she had resided in Dartmouth for nearly 70 years.
She had received a Bachelor’s degree from Regis College and a Master’s degree in Education from Bridgewater State University.
Mrs. Ouellette had a successful career as a teacher for over 30 years, teaching first in Trumbull, CT and then in Dartmouth, MA. She had worked as a real estate broker for Vera J. Almgren Real Estate and Shulamith Friedland Real Estate. She was a woman of deep faith. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Dartmouth and was a Lector and Eucharist Minister there for many years. She also sang and played the guitar at mass. She was a Rectora for the Cursillo movement of the Diocese of Fall River at La Salette.
Jan’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. She had many interests, including sailing, cooking, reading, knitting, gardening and traveling. She loved to sing and knew the tune of every song, but very few lyrics. She was also a purist of the English language, affectionately known as the grammar police.
Jan loved to tell a good story, often taking literary license with details to make the story even better. These changes were affectionately referred to as “Jan Facts”. Jan’s literary license was not limited to stories. She was known to change the names of things to something she liked “better”. So, “Portuguese muffins” became “Portuguese pancakes” and “sea lavender” became “sea heather”.
She is survived by her children, Maureen Judith Horan, Andrew Christopher Horan, Elisabeth Ellen Horan and Nina R. Horan, PhD, JD and her husband Robert Lewis; her sister, Judith Dolloff, RSM; her grandchildren, Jason, Monique, Jacob, Caden, Nathaniel, Harrison, Maeve, Finnegan and Cailin; and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Mark Benedict Horan.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Jan’s memory to the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, 15 Highland View Rd., Cumberland, RI 02864-1124. Services are private. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth.
