Francis Xavier Cronin, “Fran”, husband, best friend and soul mate of Judy Smith Cronin passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Shapiro Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston from complications following knee replacement surgery.
Fran was born on April 8, 1954 in Boston to Joan (Sweeney) and Jerome Cronin. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Hannah and Mariah Baker of South Dartmouth and Kimberly Cronin, as well as his two faithful dogs Sophie and Ozzie. He is also survived by three brothers, Jerome Cronin, Jr. and his wife Marie and daughters Caitlin and Devin of Marshfield; Neil Cronin, his wife Jeannie and daughters Colleen and Jeannine of New Bedford, Paul Cronin, his wife Donna of Norwell, one sister Joanne White, her husband Steve of Taunton, and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Cronin of Raynham and children Timothy (Diana) and Kristy (Eric) Hawes along with three great nieces, Ashley and Audrey Hawes and Brooke Christine Francis Cronin born on the day of Fran’s passing. Fran is also survived by his parents-in-law Patricia and Sherman Smith, sister-in-law Amy Smith Pontes, brother-in-law Jonathan Smith and nieces Frances and Lily Pontes all of South Dartmouth.
Fran was a 1972 graduate of Boston Latin High School, where he was an outstanding athlete and All-Scholastic Football and Baseball player. Graduating from Harvard University in 1976, he continued to excel academically and on the football field and baseball diamond, earning the prestigious Henry Lamarr Award for football during his senior year. Fran’s professional career as a construction superintendent focused on the building of numerous schools over the years, including Dartmouth High School in 2002 where he met the love of his life, Judy; they married in August 2004.
Fran was a valued team member of Callahan Construction of Bridgewater. Fran, Judy, and their family enjoyed travelling the world, and their special places were Bermuda and Ireland. Fran loved Barney’s Joy Beach and road trips to anywhere with Judy in his 55 AMG.
Visiting hours will be Monday, February 1, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Dartmouth Street, Dartmouth Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 9:00AM. Friends and family are invited. There will also be a remembrance services of Fran’s life in the spring at Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting in South Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations for a scholarship in Fran’s name may be to Dartmouth High School, Guidance Department, 555 Bakerville Road, Dartmouth, MA 02748.
