The first born son to Donald H. and Caroline (Luchetti) King, Don attended Dartmouth Public Schools and graduated from Dartmouth High. He was a member of the basketball, football and golf teams. He subsequently attended St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire on a golf scholarship and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1964. He continued his education by attending Bridgewater State College and Boston University obtaining his Master’s Degree in Biology and Certification in Guidance and Secondary Administration. He worked for Dartmouth’s Department of Public Works and for Alley’s Restaurant in Westport during the summers. His first job in his teaching career was as a science teacher at Hastings Junior High School in Fairhaven.
The following summer, the Principal of Dartmouth High, Mr. Erickson, recruited him as a biology teacher for Dartmouth High School where he stayed for the remainder of his career. He was a biology teacher for 12 years (and supervised the operation of a small greenhouse), a Guidance Counselor for three years under the direction of Chester Smith, Guidance Director for four years, Director of Pupil Personnel Services for four years, and finally was the Principal of Dartmouth High School for 16 years.
In the early part of his career, he was an assistant football coach under the leadership of Carlin Lynch and subsequently became the head coach of the freshman football team at Dartmouth High.
Other achievements include being a Town Meeting Member, Treasurer of the Dartmouth Council on Aging, Member of the Board of Directors of Dartmouth Community Television, Member of Commonwealth of Massachusetts Curriculum Committee, Member of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Football Committee, Member of the Dartmouth Youth Athletic Association, Member of the Dartmouth Town Use Committee, Member of the Building Committee for the new Dartmouth High School, Board Member of the Burgo Basketball Association, Chief Purchasing Officer for Dartmouth Fire District 3, and Member of the Dartmouth Knights of Columbus of the Father Hogan Council. During the summers, he worked as the head of Dartmouth’s Recreation Department for thirteen years.
On June 21, 1969, he married Margaret (Peg) M. Fogerty and had their pride and joy, Alan. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, their son, Alan and his wife Lisa; his brother Paul and his wife Jyl; various cousins, nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank Dr. David Clark and his staff for their care through the years.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 10:00AM in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02747. Everyone is to go directly to church.
