Domingo Lopez

Domingo "Papa" “King” Lopez died at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his daughters on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in New Bedford, MA due to complications of severe dementia. Our sweet, gentle Papa was 83.

Known by his family as “King” and his grandchildren and friends as “Papa”, Domingo was born on August 16, 1933 in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico to his parents, Confesor Lopez and Juana Lopez (nee Gonzalez). Papa was a proud textile worker who worked under the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union for 25 years before retiring in 1996 to enjoy his family, long walks, and the animals he would meet on his walking adventures. Everyone loved Papa.

Papa was an amazing cook, which was only rivaled by his sweet and tender spirit towards other people and animals. He loved his dogs Mickey and Eboney and we know he will be greeted by both in heaven. He enjoyed being home, and was often found on the patio smoking a cigar and drinking his coffee while whistling to the birds.

Papa is survived by his daughter and son-in-law whom he lived with for 35 years, Rosemarie Frias (nee Lopez) and Jose A. Frias of South Dartmouth, MA; another daughter, Anna Marie Villafane (nee Lopez) and her husband Luis Villafane; his granddaughters: Samantha Ana Torres (nee Frias) and her husband Jerry Torres; Brianna Lopez; Danielle Lopez; Xnayubell Villafane; and Yolanda Villafane; his nine great-grandchildren; and his ex-wife Ana Perez. Papa is preceded in death by his parents and all his seven siblings.

Papa’s Visitation will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 9:00AM to 10:30AM at the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00AM at St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial private. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090.

The family would like to express thanks to the nursing staff at Brandon Woods in South Dartmouth, MA for Papa’s care the past two years.
