Phyllis C. (Manley) Horton, “Carol”, also known affectionately by her family as “Mickey”, a longtime resident of Somerset, passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Clifton Nursing and Rehabilitation, with her children by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Clarence B. Horton.
Born in Dighton, a daughter of the late Raymond and Barbara (Hunt) Manley, Carol was a graduate of Joseph Case High School, Class of 1955. A bookkeeper for several nursing homes within the Catholic Diocese, she also worked as a bank teller at B.M.C. Durfee Trust and People’s Credit Union and as a caterer and office manager for the Case House in Swansea, MA.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Carol was very artistic and enjoyed painting and a variety of crafts. She was a gifted seamstress, who from the age of eight began designing her own patterns and sewing items such as clothing, dolls and stuffed animals, Christmas tree skirts, curtains, and upholstery. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and dancing with her husband. Time spent boating and fishing with her family also brought her much joy. Carol faced challenges in her life with grace and strength. Among her many unforgettable qualities, Carol will be remembered as a generous, sweet, and classy lady who always put the needs of others above her own.
Carol is survived by her two beloved children, Karen (Horton) Frenette and her husband Doug of Lakeville and Stephen Horton of Jensen Beach, FL; one sister, Sharen Houle and her companion Barry Ross; four grandchildren, Joshua Horton and his wife, Elisa, Tara Ruiz and her husband, Felipe, Kelsey Vacca and her husband, Peter, and Alexandra Horton, as well as three great granddaughters, Harley Juliet Ruiz, and Nola and Tessa Vacca. She also leaves behind many dear nephews and nieces. Carol was the sister of the late Sondra Reid and mother-in-law of the late Debbie Horton.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County St., Somerset. Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hortonville Rd., Swansea, MA. A service of remembrance and celebration of life will be held following the burial, at Cornerstone Community Church, 111 Highland Rd., Lakeville, MA at 12:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited.
