Born in Fall River, a son of the late James E. and Annie (Wetherall) Mullins, he was a longtime resident of Somerset.
James was the Class President at B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1946 and attended Coyne Electrical School in Boston. He worked as a Foreman for Fall River Electric Light Company for over 40 years prior to his retirement.
A Veteran of the United States Navy he served during WWII and was an avid collector of US Naval History. He was a member of the American Legion, Fall River Clover Club, the Over the Hill Gang, Tin Can Sailors and the Naval Institute. James was an amateur piano player and volunteered his time playing for the residents at Clifton, Adams House and Charlton Memorial Hospital.
He leaves lasting memories for all who knew him. Among his happiest moments were reading “A Visit from St. Nicholas “ to family and friends on Christmas Eve, taking the family out for a good Portuguese steak dinner, and arriving early to as many used book sales as possible. He was a proud son of Fall River with happy memories of growing up in Corky Row, meeting his future wife at Lincoln Park and raising a loving family in Somerset. He loved spending time with all of his family and grandchildren and will be missed by all.
He spent his last few months of his life at Swan Brook Assisted Living Center in Swansea where he enjoyed playing piano for his friends. He also received wonderful care from the staffs at St. Anne’s Hospital, Somerset Ridge and Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center.
He is survived by three children, James P. Mullins and his wife Betty-Ann of Westport, Anne E. Bode of Sun Prairie, WI and Patricia A. Rapoza and her husband James of Fort Wayne, IN; six grandchildren, Matthew and Nicholas Bode, Emily Rapoza Haynes, James Rapoza, and Allison and Zachary Mullins. James was the brother of the late Catherine Ryan and Anne, Ruth, Claire, and Eileen Mullins, and father-in-law of the late Stephen Bode.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 9:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County St, Somerset followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Thomas More Church, 386 Luther Ave, Somerset. Relatives and friends invited. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
