After a long hard battle with Juvenile Onset Huntington's Disease, Schuyler Kendall Hammonds EARNED his freedom on October 1, 2015 at 8:15pm. Prior to his passing, Schuyler was a bright, fun loving, energetic individual whose personality always came shining through despite his infirmities. One of his favorite pastimes was basketball. He loved to play basketball in the front yard. He became so talented with his basketball free throw skills that, at age 2, people passing by would stop and watch him play. Another one of his favorite pastimes was watching cartoons. His favorite shows were SpongeBob Square Pants, Adventure Time, Regular Show and Phineas and Ferb. Schuyler loved playing outdoors. As his condition worsened, he became confined to a wheelchair which caused him to spend the latter part of life indoors. Due to his confinement, the back porch became his new favorite spot to hang out with his friends and watch DVD movies. His favorite movie was Guardians of the Galaxy.
Schuyler also loved playing with his toys and stuffed animals. His favorite stuffed animal was his dog named Butter which he received for Christmas at age 2. Butter quickly became a part of the Hammonds household and accompanied Schuyler everywhere he went (on planes, trains and automobiles). Even at the dinner table, where there were only 4 chairs, we had to make room for Butter (usually meaning that someone had to eat later or standing up). When Schuyler was 7 years old, he changed Butter's name to James, after his favorite basketball player, Labron James.
With his infectious smile and outgoing personality, Schuyler had no problem making friends. He loved going to school to be with his friends. His closest friends were Curtis, Chase and Kyle, who we called the 4 Musketeers. Sadly, due to his deteriorating condition, Schuyler had to leave his fellow Musketeers behind to attend Oakland Meadow School for medically fragile children. Schuyler faithfully attended school and made good grades (A's and B's) until his hospitalization and death.
Schuyler leaves behind his father Craig, mother Juleen, big brother Spencer, grandfather Hopeton Ramsay, along with an abundance of relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins), friends (neighbors, classmates), and community members (teachers, bus drivers, doctors, nurses, CNAs, etc.), all who became a vital part of his care and comfort until he found his peace. Schuyler was dearly loved and will truly be missed. NO MORE SEIZURES, NO MORE SPASMS, NO MORE PAIN.
Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, Schuyler is free at last!
