John was born October 25, 1930 in West Paris Maine, the son of Charles E and Lona (Mansur) Shute.
In 1948, John enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country for twenty years. While in the Navy, John met Maria Anna Wahl. They were married on August 14, 1958 in Hempstead, New York. John and Marianne raised five children, Teresa, Daniel, Robin, Patricia and Michael. He retired in 1968 as an E-6, Chief Petty Officer at the US Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine.
Shortly after his Navy retirement, John and his family moved to Norridgewock. John worked various jobs for the Women's Correctional Center in Skowhegan, Town of Norridgewock Road Department, carpenter work, School District 49 in Fairfield, caretaker for a camp in Rangeley, and Foxwood's Casino in Connecticut. He was a member of the FOE Post 1457 in Skowhegan, the American Legion Post 14 in Fairfield and the Maine Trapper's Association. He also received his Maine Guide's License. Over the past 37 years, John and his family resided in Smithfield up until their declining health the past 2 years.
John was known by many as being friendly, witty, always having a silly joke or story to tell and had an infectious smile. John was very much an outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed fly tying, reading, any kind of puzzles, annual family gatherings, trips to the casino and scratch tickets.
He is predeceased by his parents, brother Elmer, sister Londa, daughters Michelle, Robin, and Teresa.
John is survived by his wife, Marianne of 57 years, his son Daniel J Shute and partner Sigrid Barcelo of Gilbert, AZ, daughter Patricia K Wing of Norridgewock, son Michael H Shute and wife Linda of Mercer, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters, Dorcas LaPointe of Foster, RI, Kay McDowell of Mesa, AZ, Mildred Reynolds of Coventry, RI and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Friday, August 28, 2015 from 1-3pm at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 10:00 am at the same location.
