1930-2014 Frank Edgar Poirier Jr. went to his final rest in Jesus late Monday night at VA Maine Healthcare Systems-Togus in Augusta, surrounded by his loving family. The son of Vitaline and Frank E. Poirier Sr., Frank was born on Oct. 31, 1930, in Skowhegan. He attended Skowhegan High School Bloomfield Academy and joined the Air Force at age 17. Frank served in Fairbanks, Alaska, from 1947 to 1950. Upon his return to Skowhegan, he met and married the love of his life, Dawn D. Davis, in September 1952. They were married for 59 years before Dawn passed away in 2012. Frank retired from a long career in carpentry in the late '90s but continued to provide his talent and experience to many local organizations and people as a volunteer, including hospice, his church and Riverview Memorial School. He spent the last years of his life volunteering for hospice. One of Frank's great loves in life was his music that he shared over the decades. One of his greatest enjoyments was playing music with his family. For the past 40 years he sang every Tuesday night at nursing homes in the community, including Cedar Ridge. He was a member of the Mercer Bog String Band, a well-loved bluegrass band during the '80s. Frank was a member of the Norridgewock Seventh Day Adventist Church. He served as a faithful deacon for many years, often ministering through his music. Frank is survived by his children, Wendy Belanger and husband Roger, of Norridgewock, Frank "Joe" and wife Barbie, of Pittsfield, Michael and wife Debbie, of Mercer, Cindy Beckner and husband Tim, of Skowhegan, and Tim and wife Lori, of Harmony. He is also survived by his siblings Armand, Irene Devoe, Leatrice Poulin, Clara Withee, Louis, Teresa Irwin and Esther Tracy. Frank leaves behind 14 grandchildren, six grandchildren-in-law, 11 great-grandchildren, many adopted children, many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Val. Frank was predeceased by his wife, Dawn; his parents, Frank and Vitaline Poirier; an infant brother, Frederick; a sister, Joanne; and brother Johnny. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Norridgewock Seventh Day Adventist Church, Upper Main Street, Norridgewock, followed by a reception at the Riverview Memorial School, 201 Mercer Road, Norridgewock. A warm thank-you is extended to Dr. Jim and his team at the VA Medical Center Hospice Unit at Togus for their dedicated care and friendship to Frank and his family.
