On Tuesday September 14, 2018 Lillie Hatton Bakalis passed away peacefully. Born in Brooksville, Florida in 1927 to James and Alice Hatton. She earned her BA from Florida State University and shortly after moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the Stars and Stripes at Walter Reed. In 1952 she married the love of her life, Jimmy Bakalis.
Over the years she dedicated her time to several charities including serving on the Board of Directors of the Philoptochos Society of Saint Sophia. Many of her charities included participating in the Meals on Wheels program. A large part of her life was dedicated to the Daughters of Penelope and was a Charter Member of Arion Chapter 298 where she served as President several times, and was District 3 Governor. She was honored as “National Penelope” of the year.
Lillie loved to travel, spend summers in Ocean City but mostly loved her family. She is preceded in death by her husband James, and survived by two daughters, Barbara Bakalis, Linda Pinkston (Mark) two Grandsons, Aaron (Jen) and Ryan and two Great Granddaughters, Parker and Ever.
Services will be held at Saint's Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church 701 Norwood Road, Silver Spring MD 20905. With viewing from 10-11am and services beginning at 11am, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill, MD.
The family suggests any contributions in honor of Lillie be made to Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Washington DC or Saint's Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Silver Spring. Arrangements by Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home.
