Melba Walker Ross, 91, was called by Jesus to her heavenly home on January 12, 2016. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will also be there from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. preceding the service. Conducting the service will be Dr. Murry Hodge, senior adult pastor at Summer Grove Baptist Church.
Melba, the youngest of 9 children, was born to James J. Walker and Elva Youngblood Walker on Christmas Eve, 1924 at the family home near Mansfield, LA. She finished high school at Pelican, LA, and went on to graduate as a registered nurse from Old Charity Nursing School in Shreveport in 1945. She married Daniel G. Ross in June, 1945. Melba followed his career with the United Gas Pipeline Co. all across the Gulf South, living in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana, finally returning to settle in Shreveport in 1965. She has been a faithful member of Summer Grove Baptist Church since that time. She loved the members of her Priscilla Sunday School class very much and appreciated their kindness through her homebound years.
Our mother was a dedicated Christian who loved her family and friends unconditionally. She instilled in all of us Christian values and a strong work ethic. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, four sisters, her husband Daniel Ross, her granddaughter Beth Hickman, and son-in-law Lewis Hickman Jr. Melba is survived by her daughter, Mary Hickman, son Robert Ross and wife Pam, grandsons Ross Hickman and wife Angie, Ben Ross and wife Carmen, and four precious great-grandchildren Aaron and Carson Hickman and Allie and Reagan Ross.
Serving as pallbearers are grandsons Ross Hickman and Ben Ross, great-grandsons Aaron and Carson Hickman, and nephews Bill Hamilton and Steve Bacle.
The family would like to thank her doctors for their loving care over many years: Dr. Alan Borne, Dr. Scott Boniol, Drs. Donald Texada and Russell Van Norman, Dr. Tom Pressly and the staff of the Schumpert Cancer Center. Also, our gratitude goes out to Catherine and Brenda, her devoted caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, The Gideons International or the charity of one’s choice.
