Shreveport, LA- Funeral services celebrating the life of Edna Mae Powell, 93, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in the chapel of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.
Edna Mae Powell was born August 9, 1923 in Ivan, LA to Ossie Franklin and Maude Emma Walker, the fourth of eight siblings. She went to be with her Lord on December 2, 2016.
Edna Mae grew up in a large, close and faithful family. The church provided her like-minded friends and a continued source of spiritual support. She had a lovely voice and sang for many years in the church choir and participated in a various church groups.
She began her career as administrative assistant at Lone Star Steel in East Texas in the 1950’s. After taking a break to raise her family she continued her career serving for many years as the pastor’s administrative assistant both at First Baptist Church in Bossier City and later at Broadmoor Baptist Church, where she retired from service in the late 1980s.
A lover of adventure, she and her husband, Truitt regularly traveled both in the US and in Europe. Their dream was to have their children visit every state in the US, and this love of adventure continued throughout their life, traveling many times to the American southwest, particularly to the canyonlands of Arizona and Utah.
Edna’s zest for life also included dancing. She and Truitt were members of the Southern Swingers Square Dance Club for 10 years, and even within the past year she took up ballroom dancing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William Truitt Powell, and her son Russell Truitt Powell.
She is survived by her son, Brian Lee Powell and her grandson, Walker Ross Powell of Lafayette, LA; her granddaughters, Samantha Elizabeth Powell and Alexandra Maude Powell and step-grandson, Robert Arthur Harris.
