Leonard was born March 30, 1930 in Milwaukee to Arthur and Mabel (Sather) Schaefer. His family moved to Sheboygan in 1933. He was a graduate of Sheboygan Central High School, Class of 1949.
On July 25, 1959, Leonard and Joanne L. Schieble were united in marriage. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1994.
Leonard was employed in retail sales mostly with managing J.C. Penney Shoe Departments in Iron Mountain, MI, Jacksonville and Rockford, IL and at the Kohler Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Leonard served with the Wisconsin National Guard 32nd Division, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, Co F from 1947 to 1956. He was a past member of EAA, Warbird Squad Six, East Troy Electric Railroad Museum, Milwaukee Electric Train Historical Society, and the Motor Bus Society. He had a great interest in civilian and military aviation from the 1930’s and 1940’s. His hobbies included early American history and he enjoyed attending Civil War re-enactments.
He is survived by his brother, Arthur (Wilma) Schaefer of Sheboygan; his children, Lorna Schaefer of New Berlin, WI, Curt (Julie) Schaefer of Sheboygan, Karen (Kevin) Gross of Fond du Lac, WI, and Eric (Jennifer) Schaefer of Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Joanne, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Diener.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Ballhorn Chapels. Rev. John Berg, Associate Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
