Dr. Ross Leo Burrows was born near Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on March 2, 1919, graduated from Seminole High School, and earned his college and medical degrees in Chicago, but spent most of his life in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He served in World War II in the South Pacific as a pharmacist and surgery tech aboard U.S. Navy ships, most notably the U.S.S. Capps (DD-550). After the war, Ross served his community as a chiropractor and had a thriving practice in Shawnee for many years.
Ross married Jeanette Hendricks on New Year’s Eve 1940 and they had four children together: Carole, Ross Jr., Betty, and Monti Chris. Ross and Jeanette were married 67 years before her death in 2008. Ross was also preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Bird. He had five grandchildren, Monty Corley, Melisa Corley King, Jennifer Burrows McClellan, Natalie Burrows Pearce, and Charles “Chip” Bird. Ross also had 12 great-children and six great-great-grandchildren.
Ross was quite the “green thumb” and could make anything grow. He enjoyed spending a lot of time taking care of his lawn and was known for his beautiful irises. Ross also enjoyed road trips, especially getaways to the Gulf Coast in Galveston and Corpus Christi. He was a big fan of Willie Nelson and westerns. Ross joined his wife and daughter in Heaven on December 15, 2020 and will always be lovingly remembered by his family and community.
