Harriet Ann McCurtain Tehauno, “Sissy” to family and close friends, entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the age of 76 in Shawnee, OK. Harriet was a full-blooded member of the Choctaw Nation.
Harriet was born on April 6, 1946, to Oscar and Viola McCurtain.
Harriet was raised in the Rocky Point community of Haskell County and attended Siloam Spring Methodist Church. They moved to Talihina; her father started working for the Indian hospital there. She attended St Paul United Methodist Church and graduated from Talihina High school. After high school she attended Haskell University, then she made her way to California where her uncle Simon lived and then eventually found her way to Dallas, TX. She was an avid basketball player receiving the MVP award during the NABI National Basketball tournament in Phoenix, AZ. Harriet is known for her smile and laughter.
One day that smile was caught by a young man named Vernon and he enjoyed her laughter. It captured him so much that they were united in marriage on February 14, 1975. Harriet and Vernon made their home in Shawnee, OK in 1977, where they became church members at First Indian Baptist Church. They soon made lifelong family relations with Mike and Nora Deer, Gary and Linda Montgomery, Mary and Turner Silmon, Stella and Joe Clay, Bill and Wanda Tiger, Jimmie Carol and Mike Dover, Allen and Susie Wind, and Wanda and Tom Chupco, and along with numerous brothers and sisters in Christ. Harriet enjoyed cheering on her kids and grandkids in sport activities, watching her grandkids dance at powwows, and rooting for the OKC Thunder Basketball team.
Harriet is preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Viola Mccurtain, daughter: Tamara, her brother Oscar Jr known as Sonny, son: Derrick “Bo” Deer, grandson: Asaiah, Niece: Christina Tehauno, along with several uncles, aunts and close cousins.
She is survived by her husband Vernon of the home, Son’s: Rueben Tehauno of Shawnee, OK, Michael, David, Brandon Deer of Shawnee, OK, Robert and Jimmy Smith Tehauno of Flagstaff, AZ, Asa Samuels of Shawnee, OK, her daughters: Trisha and Keeno of Shawnee, OK, Channa Deer of Shawnee, OK Grandsons: Elijah, Jordan, Angel, Bo, Mack, Jose, Kellen, Joel, Josiah, Jack, Kwintyn, Wayne, Myles Brayden, Jaden, Raiden. Granddaughters: Mahaya, Izzy, Allanna, Brooklyn, Kylee, Numu, Alena, Kenadee, Athena, Kensi, Marissa, Braylen, Addison, Karli, and Makaya. Nephews: Mike Mccurtain, Jai Tainpeah, Nieces: Yvonne Dinehdeal, Aja Tainpeah, Lahoma Silmon Roberts, Lynn Heath, Kent and Carmen Tehauno, Sister: Iola Perry Beaver and close cousins Catherine Prince, Bill Durant, and sister/ cousins Vivian Martinez and Nellie Long.
Wake service will be 7:00 pm Sunday November 20th, 2022, and funeral services 11:00 am Monday November 21, 2022, both to be held at the First Indian Baptist Church on Minnesota and Darrow streets in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Burial will be at the Resthaven Cemetery. We would like to thank the Pastor Rev. Spencer Davis for being the moderator and Rev. Victor Cope for bringing the message.
