Gwendolyn Gwen Pearl Chandler Gray

Gwen was born December 5, 1920 in Great Bend, Kansas to John Roscoe Chandler and Mabel (Barber) Chandler. The family moved to Pawhuska in 1922, where Gwen attended grade school. She graduated from Norman High School in 1939 and from The University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree in home economics in 1943. She later earned a Master’s degree from East Central University in 1959.

Gwen taught vocational homemaking for sixteen years at Mountain Home Consolidated School, Prague High School, and Henryetta High School. She married Gordon T. “Sam” Gray on August 9, 1959. They moved to Shawnee in 1960, where Mr. Gray owned and operated the Gray Wholesale Grocery. Gwen worked as a site manager and later the food coordinator for the Senior Citizens’ Nutrition Program. She later worked as Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program before retiring.

Gwen was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church since 1960. She taught the Triple C Sunday School class for many years, was an active member of United Methodist Women often serving as a circle leader, was an OBOE sponsor, and was an active member of Senior Adults. Gwen was a member of AARP 2654, member of Retired Teachers, and served on the Senior Center Board. She participated in Beta Sigma Phi activities for 55 years.

Gwen was an avid reader and spent many hours with her books. She was also a great fan of Sooner football, never missing an opportunity to attend, view, or listen to a game for over 70 years.

Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother (Roscoe Chandler), and a grandson (Tyler Gray). She is survived by her son (Gordon Gray) and his wife(Stacia Wert-Gray) of Edmond, grandsons (Truit, Thomas, and Travis Gray)all of Edmond, sister-in-law (Billie Chandler), niece (Melanie Mize), nephews (John Chandler, Gary Chandler, Larry Chandler) and many friends.

Private graveside services will be held at Holdenville Cemetery. Memorial Services will be Saturday, August 18th, 2:00pm at Wesley United Methodist Church. For more information, please visit www.ResthavenFH.com
