Born in Niagara Falls, NY, she married Carl Schoelles in 1946 and raised four children with him. They moved several times as Carl changed professions, living in New York, Florida, Missouri (where she helped put Carl through medical school), then back to Florida, settling in Largo in 1966. After they divorced, Alice opened her home to people needing a short-term stay, like missionaries, medical residents and wandering travelers.
In 1976 Alice became an entrepreneur at age 50 and started the Coffee Mill, roasting and selling coffees & teas, candy and gifts. With her daughter Karen she successfully ran that business for almost 40 years, retiring at age 88!
Alice survived serious colon cancer in her 70’s. After discontinuing her chemo when the side effects overwhelmed her, she eventually recovered and was healthy until dementia slowly claimed her mind about a decade ago. Her last six years were spent as a resident of Arden Courts memory care where she was the “flower ambassador,” picking flowers every day in the garden and passing them to all the “nice people.”
Alice loved her Lord and lived her life in service to others. She would sing choruses wit her girls until her last days and was an active member of Grace Christian Fellowship until going into resident care. We rejoice in and honor her example of grace, kindness, sweet temperament and devotion to her Lord.
A slip and fall in the night caused many brittle bones to break, leading to her death at a Hospice care center on August 29, 2023.
Alice is survived by her four children: Karen Hone, Donna Jarrell, Craig Schoelles and Dale Schoelles, along with their spouses, 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on
