My father, Mr. Zhi Kang Chen, was born on September 10, 1941 in Shanghai, China. He peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at UW Northwest Hospital in Seattle, WA, at age of 83.
My father was the eldest of the 6 siblings in the family. In his earlier years, he studied at the high school section of the Changyang Middle School in Yangpu District, Shanghai. He was gifted, intelligent and wise, with excellent grades and a wide range of interests. He loved the sports of soccer, especially good at the forward position, and was an excellent ball striker. He was diligent in reading, knowledgeable, and had beautiful fountain pen writing. My father was an introverted and calm person. He was proficient in Chinese chess, often bought and studied the books of the endgame strategies, played chess with others, and had superb chess skills.
After graduating from high school, he worked at Shanghai Yunling Chemical Plant as a chemical machinery engineer. He was diligent and dedicated, hardworking, meticulous and efficient in his work, and was deeply trusted and praised by his leaders and colleagues. In life, he was sincere, took honesty and trustworthiness as the foundation, and was a responsible and strong person.
My father and mother Yueqin Qiu got married on February 1, 1965. They raised two daughters, Yi-Ping Chen and Yiling Chen in Shanghai. Our parents taught us to be honest with good conduct and morals from a young age. We two sisters immigrated to the United States in 1987 and 2011 respectively.
On August 28, 1994, my parents immigrated to the United States after retiring in Shanghai. My mother returned to live in Chian a few years later. My father took on the responsibility of taking care of the grandson and daughters’ families. He picked up and dropped off his grandson from kindergarten all the way to high school. He managed to maintain the indoor and outdoor areas of the daughter's houses, repaired and renovated the kitchen and bathroom. In Spring he removed weeds, in Autumn he swept the fallen leaves, and in Winter he shoveled the snow. He protected us from the wind and rain, and cared for us until the end of his life. My father was always so busy, hardworking, and took care of everything in the daughters’ houses. He worked hard for us and gave us his whole love!
My father's great love is as heavy as a mountain, as deep as the sea, and forever endlessly! We will always remember you in our hearts! We thank you, grateful, and cherish our father! Dear Dad: Rest in peace, we will always miss you!
