My beloved Mother, Sedigheh was born on May 10th of 1927 in Ghoochan, Iran, and passed on February 14th, 2023. She was the third daughter of Mr. Muhammed Ali Shabestari and Robabeh who were a baker and candy maker in town. She loved sweets! And always claimed it was the fault of her Father who owned a candy shop. She passed away at home in my arms, her youngest child. Every breath she took on this earth was full of passion, attitude, and love. She was not a quiet lady by any means, hated silence, and loved a party, especially if it involved dancing. She truly was an artist at home making; she made homemaking an art. She raised four successful kids with the love of her life, her Akbar. What she was most proud of were her kids, her cooking, how she could forcefully make any dead plant come to life, her ability to have a rhythm to music at the age of 95, and how lovely she could draw her eyebrows. She and I fought hard for her; I was amazed at the courage she showed toward the end of her life- her strength and willpower were extraordinary. I am proud to have been born and raised by her; I am certain her other children feel the same as I do. I will visit her again in my dreams and thoughts; promising to finally bake her orange peel cake from scratch while listening to her criticize how it’s getting baked. Maman, go rest in peace, pain-free, and dance for Baba. To be frank, you two were made for each other. Till I see you again and make you smile.
