Dr. Richard Henry Johnson, D.D.S., passed away June 19, 2022, in Seattle, WA, at the age of 88. Dick Johnson was born July 26, 1933, in Seattle, to William and Isabel Johnson and graduated from West Seattle High School. He attended the University of Washington, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, and graduated from the UW Dental School in 1957.
After a one-year internship at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Dick returned to downtown Seattle and began his private practice in the Cobb Building, where he operated a successful dental office for 47 years, retiring in 2004.
Dick held Life membership in the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, and International College of Dentists. Following his retirement, he continued serving as mentor in dental study clubs and as an affiliate faculty member with the UW Dental School, Department of Restorative Dentistry.
In his free time, Dick was an avid boater and salmon fisherman. He was a devoted member of the Seattle Yacht Club since 1971, serving as Commodore in 2003. A highlight included the 2002 trip to New Zealand to represent the club for the America's Cup/Louis Vuitton sailboat race – where he was honored with a trip aboard One World racing sailboat as the “17th man” crewmember – quite an exciting experience for a “mere powerboater”!
Most of all, Dick enjoyed spending summers, since the 1960s, cruising and fishing the waters from Puget Sound to Desolation Sound.
He loved family get-togethers during the holidays and summers, and he remained a Husky football season ticket holder for over fifty years.
Dick married his wife Marol in 1977, and they enjoyed 45 loving years together until her passing in February 2022. Dick is survived by his sons Mike Johnson (Melinda), Rick Johnson, Kirk Johnson (Debbie), Paul Johnson, and daughter Sena Johnson (Kushal), and proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Dick is preceded in death by his older brother Donald Johnson and daughter-in-law Diane Johnson.
A celebration of life is scheduled on September 18, 2022, at 1:00 pm at the Seattle Yacht Club. The family encourages remembrances be made to the University of Washington Dental School.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Johnson family.
