On Thursday, June 16, 2022, Mei-Yun Chang passed away peacefully from a pulmonary embolism with her son by her side. She was 98. Mei-Yun ("beautiful cloud") was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born in Wendeng, Shandong Province, China in April 1924.
As the eldest child, she helped her parents, Xu Langxuan and Xu Wenluan, care for her six siblings. Mei-Yun's family lives near the northeast Chinese seashore in Dalian City, where she went to elementary school. She was very young when she left her whole family to move to Beijing (also known as "Peking") to attend middle school, high school, and the prestigious Peking Normal University. Mei-Yun majored in music, specializing in piano. While in Beijing, she met her future husband, a captain in Chiang Kai-Shek's army, whom she wed in 1946. In 1949 a pregnant Mei-Yun, her husband, and toddler daughter escaped the civil war conflict in Beijing and fled to Taiwan. Throughout her career, she taught piano at both high school and college levels while helping raise her granddaughter and grandson. She lived in Taiwan until retiring as an associate professor at age 62 in order to take care of her fourth grandchild who was about to be born in the United States. For her entire life, Mei-Yun was a devout Christian, demonstrating selflessness, kindness, generosity, and compassion. She was devoted wholeheartedly to taking care of others and would rather have less so that others could have more.
Mei-Yun is united in heaven with her husband Hui-Tseung Chang and daughter Jean Jing-Chih Rosenkrans. She is survived by her son Joseph Chang (Linda); grandchildren Anna Chang (Bill), Peter Chang, Andrew Chang (Serena), Adrian Chang (Menglin); and great-grandchildren Angelina Tang, Jasmine Ma, and Alyssa Chang.
