Mary G. Powell, born in Hampton, Virginia, January 2, 1932, passed away June 18. Mary married David T. Powell in 1952 and together they raised three children in their Seattle home. Mary and David were avid travelers; they sailed the seven seas and visited each of the seven continents. They traveled to more than seventy countries and all fifty states.
Mary was passionate about helping people and was active in the Seattle Milk Fund and other charitable organizations. She was a longtime member of the Broadview Garden Club and the Welsh Women’s Association, serving as the president, vice president and secretary.
All holidays and birthdays brought joy to Mary as she decorated extensively. Easter was the main focus when she hosted all of her extended family for 65 continuous years. Her observance of holidays helped to create lasting family bonds. She was interested in all parts of her family’s lives. She was quietly generous and always available to help someone in need.
Mary was an expert gardener, creating beautiful landscapes of flowers, plants and pathways. Her considerable knowledge and true love of flowers was an integral part of Mary.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, David and is survived by two brothers Eldred (Janice) and William (Carole) Hicks; a sister, Margaret (Steve) Wieting; three children Elizabeth, Thomas (Carole), and Catherine (Don) Ellis; five grandchildren Randi, Jeff, Jamie, Danae, and Elli, and five great-granddaughters.
