Maria Origenes Orallo MD OCDS, of Seattle, Washington, departed this world peacefully on March 20th, 2022. Her love and prayers can now be felt from up into the heavens. She was a beloved spouse, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, matriarch and esteemed physician.
Maria was born on August 4th, 1926, in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines. She was the daughter of Dr. Mauricio Origenes, Sr. and Maria Lopez Origenes. She was the oldest daughter of five children. Both parents were teachers. Education was key in their household, education and discipline. Her older brother Maurice was a Pediatric Oncologist and her younger sister, Sr. Veronica OSB, was a Nurse Practitioner. In 1968, she lost her beloved spouse Sam. She was a widowed mother while pursuing her professional career. Her mother Maria Lopez Origenes came from the Philippines to help take care of her son Sam as he grew up.
Maria was equal parts love, family, tenacious and a competitor. She was a University of Washington Fellow in Anesthesia, after she received her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas. She became one of the most successful and respected Anesthesiologists in a society unaccustomed to a female, Asian, Filipina immigrant. She particularly enjoyed her work at Children’s Orthopedic Hospital (Now Seattle Children’s) and would routinely donate her time on Tuesdays.
Maria was a devout Roman Catholic and active member of the St Joseph Carmelites OCDS in Shoreline, WA. This included establishing Carmelite groups in British Columbia, Oregon and Alaska. Her faith was unparalleled and her generosity to the Archdiocese of Seattle was bountiful. She prayed religiously starting at 4 am and for many years went to Blessed Sacrament for daily Mass. For people around her, she would remind all that "through God all things are possible."
When not at work, supporting OCDS, or watching sporting events (including UW football, the Seahawks or the Mariners), she was cooking and singing in the kitchen. She enjoyed family and friends and shared her love through good food. Nothing embodied that more than, “Fried to perfection, golden brown lumpia" and her wonderful, addicting fruit salad. She enjoyed going to her son Sam’s baseball and football games with her mother, rain or shine. Some of her most enjoyable memories are when she watched the 1975 Blanchet Braves win the Washington State football championship and her grandchildren Stefan and Mario win back-to-back Little League championships. Another wonderful memory was when she was able to travel around the world with Rev. William Treacy, Evelyn Hall and her son.
She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Mauricio Origenes Sr. and Maria Lopez Origenes, spouse Isidro (Sam) Orallo, brothers Maurice Origenes MD, Ildefonso Origenes, Jose Origenes and her infant children Carmelita and John Orallo. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Veronica RNP, OSB, son Samuel Orallo and spouse Melinda Heller, grandchildren Stefan and spouse Lauren Orallo, Mario Orallo, Andrew Heller and spouse Kaity Heller and great grandchildren Luke Orallo and Henry and Olivia Heller.
We will miss our family matriarch as she joins her family and friends in heaven. Eternal rest to you Maria, rest in peace.
