David William Wine (September 12, 1966-February 19, 2023) passed away following a diagnosis of glioblastoma in May 2020. Dave was an amazing human who touched many lives in many ways. He was deeply loved as a son, brother, husband, father, colleague, neighbor and friend.
Dave was born in Wisconsin to parents Doris A. and David F. Wine, and got all of the attention and love that any child could dream of. In 1971, the family moved from Chicago to Seattle and Dave spent most of his life in the Seattle area but got to spend some of his formative years living in Hong Kong with his family. He also had the opportunity to live in Uganda for the Peace Corps in the early 1990s. He gained many friendships along the way that he kept throughout his life.
Dave was a scientist, inventor, and musician who had the organized and structured mind that went with those skills. His early building adventures with the erector set and lego blocks set a course for all of the things he would craft and build throughout his life. He taught himself to play the guitar when he was 14 and his love for music kept him jamming for all of his days. Once Dave started riding his 10-speed bike in 1981 he kept riding and never looked back. Dave also loved astronomy and sharing his passion and knowledge of the stars and planets with others.
Dave held early jobs as a prep cook that sparked his love for food; and as a draftsperson and engineer that continued his love for design. He worked for aerospace companies and startups innovating around technology access, and he earned patents for his many professional creations. His work colleagues appreciated Dave’s natural gift of teaching and coaching in an approachable way. He was curious and fascinated to discover, study, learn and master intricate and complex subjects such as astronomy, mathematics and fractals, physics, thermodynamics.
In 1997, while biking up a big hill in Seattle, Dave met the love of his life, Kat. Their relationship and marriage celebrated creativity, being in nature, and discovering the world. They enjoyed spending their time together backpacking, biking, canoeing, playing music and reading aloud to one another. Above all, Dave and Kat respected, loved and supported each other, individually, together as a couple and as a family.
In 2007, to their great joy, Dave and Kat’s son, Henry, was born. Henry, Dave and Kat shared many adventures, from exploring and playing outdoors to creating art and music together and with family and friends. Dave and Henry shared a special bond. Dave loved nothing more than spending time with his son doing things like constructing, creating, cooking, hiking, throwing a frisbee and most of all making beautiful music together. Building a family and supporting and loving Kat and Henry was Dave’s proudest life achievement.
Dave was empowered and brave as he faced his GBM diagnosis, and he weathered every treatment and symptom with calm and curiosity. He survived nearly a year beyond the initial prognosis, a testament to his never-give-up attitude and his goal to live as well as he could for as long as he could. Dave was surrounded by the love and support of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and a great team of doctors. Dave passed away at home surrounded by all the things he loved most - his precious family, his cats, music and his mother’s handmade quilt. Everyone in his orbit is missing him every day.
Dave is survived by his wife, Kat Steinglass; his son, Henry Wine; his mother, Doris A. (Dodie) Wine; his sisters, Marty Wine (Tim Troxel) and Jennie Wine; his in-laws, Ralph and Joyce Steinglass; his brother-in-law, David Steinglass (Liz Steinglass); his niece, Jordyn Hoff; his nephews, Cameron Hoff (Destiny Yates) and Oliver, Neil and Amos Steinglass; and, his two cats, Spring and Hop.
