Albert Vernon Dunlap, 94, passed away at his Mercer Island home on November 8, 2017 due to complications from multiple strokes. He was born in Warrensburg, Missouri on November 4, 1923 to John H. and Dorothy Dunlap. He was predeceased by his son, David H. Dunlap. He is survived by Jean Dunlap, his beloved wife of 72 years; sons Albert V. Dunlap Jr, Mercer Island, and Jonathan L. Dunlap (Larysa), Woodinville; and grandchildren Jacqueline E. Dunlap and Emily M. Dunlap, Seattle, and Yaroslav S. Dunlap, Woodinville.
Albert was a 1942 high school graduate of The Baylor School, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He received his BS in Zoology from the University of Washington. He was a Navy Lieutenant in WWII flying Wildcat fighter planes from aircraft carriers in combat missions over the South Pacific and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. During his 40 year career as an optician he became a leader in the emerging field of contact lenses.
He loved golfing as a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club and during vacations in Rancho Mirage, California. His greatest passion, which he shared with his wife, was gardening and working in his greenhouse. He was fascinated with helping plants grow and always looked forward to donating produce to Northwest Harvest and to friends. He will be remembered for his keen wit which often incorporated a Latin phrase or poetic verse, but most of all he will be remembered for his lifelong devotion to his family.
His courageous spirit will keep him in our hearts forever.
