Sidney Michael Sexton JR

Sidney Michael Sexton Jr. (Sidney) was born on June 7, 1930 to Sidney M Sexton Sr. (Big Sid) and Margaret Theisen Sexton in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was the second of five children. Sidney attended school in Leavenworth and graduated from Immaculata High School where he played varsity football and was an actor. He was a faithful member of St. Augustine Catholic Church (Dallas) for over 48 years. Sidney was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus organization and the tenants of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. He was a fourth-degree knight and past four-time Grand Knight of local chapters in several states. During retirement, Sidney later served on the Seagoville, Texas City Council (2002 – 2007) and as a multi-term mayor (2007 – 2013). He was a prominent member of several transportation and urban growth committees and task forces in the North Texas Area.

Military service was a family trait. His father, sister Kathleen, and brother Patrick served in the U.S. Army. Sidney enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps upon graduating from high school in 1948. Brothers Terence and Charles joined the Marines in the mid 1950’s. In August 1950, Corporal Sidney Sexton landed in Pusan, Korea (amphibious) as part of the 1st. Marine Division. He was wounded during operations on the Pusan perimeter. He would later make amphibious landings with X Corps at Inchon and Wonsan, Korea leading to the battle of the Chosin reservoir.

Sidney led Reconnaissance Marines across mountain tops (Electric plant) until ordered to reenforce fellow Marines on the ice at Chosin. He was wounded for the second time during hand-to-hand combat with Chinese forces. Sidney was wounded a third time during the 18-month deployment to Korea. He returned to Leavenworth, Kansas as a temporary grade First Lieutenant and married the love of his life, Anne E. Lander on September 20, 1952.

The couple traveled the U.S. together, moving from one military base to another until 1956 when Sidney’s enlistment was fulfilled. The couple settled back in Leavenworth until Sidney became an employee of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1957. This began an odyssey taking them from Michigan to Missouri, Kansas, California, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and then to Texas. Sidney retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1980. His lovely Anne died on April 13, 2020 at their home in Seagoville, Texas. They were married for 67 years.

Sidney Sexton died of Covid-19 on January 10, 2021 at the age of 90 years while at a rehab facility in Mesquite, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife Anne Lander Sexton, daughter-in-law Julie Paschall Sexton, nephew Patrick Sexton II, parents, and siblings. Sidney is survived by children Sidney M. Sexton III (Harriet), Jane E. Godfrey (Donald), Frances A. Rahm (Bryan), David A. Sexton (Donna-Maria), and Stephen C. Sexton. The couple have been blessed with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by sister-in-law Casey Sexton, sister-in-law Nina Sexton, brother-in-law Denis Olek, brother-in-law Jon Lander (Judy), numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Everyone is invited to the viewing scheduled on February 4 between 6 – 8 pm at Roselawn Funeral Home located at 1000 US-175 Frontage Road, Seagoville, Texas 75159. A grave site Honor Guard service will be held at the National Cemetery in Dallas on February 5, 2021. Due to Pandemic protocol, only family members may attend the interment. A future memorial service for Anne and Sidney will be announced when conditions allow.
