Alex is preceded in death by his parents and sister Betty Pregrew.
Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Kay Riggs of 66 years, three daughters, Beth Garner and husband David, Alexia Merkel and husband David and Mary Riggs, five grandchildren, Chance Garner and wife Melia, Kevin Riggs and wife Araceli, Kristi Sherwood and husband Michael, Danial Garner and James Michael Riggs, six great grandchildren and a host of other beloved family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Thinking back on all of the wonderful things that describe Alex Riggs, one thing that stands out is his willingness to give so unselfishly of his own time to other people. He was a pillar in the community, and someone that played a vital role in shaping Crandall.
Upon his graduating from Kaufman High School, he married the love of his life, Kay Francis Cawthon in 1953. He spent the majority of his professional career working at the First Baptist Church of Dallas, where he later retired as the manager of the printing department. He was an ordained deacon at the Central Baptist Church in Crandall, where his love for the Lord was always evident.
Other roles that he served included being a volunteer for the Crandall Fire Department, where he was later named the chief of the department. He worked diligently to raise money through fundraisers to purchase the first new firetruck. He and Kay drove to Fort Worth to pick it up. He also served on the city council and was appointed mayor sometime later. He organized the first police department for the city and served as the city judge.
Alex was a member of the Crandall Lions Club and the athletic booster club. He spent lots of time actively involved in his daughters’ sporting and school events.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching birds. He and Kay spent lots of time sitting in the patio room discussing birds they saw, and keeping up with the birds that visited their backyard.
His family was so important to him. He cherished the time when everyone would get together, and he loved for his family to come visit. He always made sure that everyone was greeted and welcomed at their home.
Having to say goodbye to someone who has made such a lasting impression on so many people is difficult. Our time with him was so precious. His legacy will always live within the many selfless things he has done for the community, friends, and family.
