David Friedman Stern, known for his creativity, warmth, humor and unwavering optimism, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, the youngest of two boys, to parents deeply involved in Seattle community and politics.
From a young age, David displayed a remarkable zest for life, embarking on creative endeavors and showcasing his talents in various fields. He was a lover of sports, and as a teen became an accomplished racket sports enthusiast, yo-yo and tiddlywinks champion, and golfer. He enjoyed playing tricks, and at one point held the record for stuffing the most people possible in a phone booth! If the sign at the end of the road read, "do not enter," David entered, and always found a new adventure.
After marrying his beloved wife, Margaret (preceded in death after 49 years of marriage), David returned to Seattle and established a successful advertising agency. His innovative mind led him to create the iconic happy face button, a symbol of joy and positivity that resonated with people worldwide. Though he chose not to patent his creation, preferring to spread happiness rather than engage in legal battles, David's legacy as the creator of the happy face endures, and he handed out the button to everyone he encountered.
David's passion for serving his community led him to work for numerous social causes, including the Seattle School Levy and Planned Parenthood, and was an avid Rotarian. Ultimately, this led him to pursue his own career in politics, where he ran twice for mayor of Seattle, leaving a lasting impact on the city he cherished.
After many years in Seattle, David and Margaret relocated to Scottsdale, where they indulged in their love for sunshine and golf. David was an incredibly devoted husband for nearly 50 years, and a wonderful, loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend to many. He is survived by daughters Debbie and Ruth, and grandchildren Izzy and Kaz, along with loving extended family and friends who are like family.
David Stern will be remembered for his boundless enthusiasm, compassionate spirit, and enduring legacy of spreading joy wherever he went. He could make more friends in the lobby of a hotel than most make in a lifetime. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. David will be laid to rest in Seattle, and a celebration of his life will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, in the fall.
