Marie Ann (Long) Murray
Marie passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at South Shore Hospital, surrounded by her family and loved ones, after a brief illness.
Marie was born September 7, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. She attended St. Isaac Jogues School, then went on to Regina High School. After graduation, Marie attended Wayne State University for one year, majoring in music – one of her passions – before moving with her family to Massachusetts in 1965. She graduated from Catherine Labouré School of Nursing at Carney Hospital in 1969.
She began her 48-year career as a Registered Nurse at Shriners Burns Institute in Boston. She transitioned to the pediatric operating room at the Boston Floating Hospital (Tufts Medical Center), finishing her tenure there as Director of Operative Nursing. For her final 28 years, she returned to Carney Hospital Operating Room, ultimately holding the position of Charge Nurse of the Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Services. Marie was an active member of the Massachusetts Nurses Association throughout her career, advocating for safe staffing and quality nursing standards of care. She retired from nursing to enjoy her cherished family.
In 2014, Marie began her second vocation as a volunteer with the Scituate Food Pantry. Several years later, she accepted the role of Executive Director, fulfilling her passion for serving her much loved Scituate community. A woman of deep faith, Marie also served as a lector at St. Mary of the Nativity, Scituate Harbor.
As proud as Marie was of being a nurse and community advocate, she was first and foremost a first-born daughter, a sister, a wife, an aunt, a godmother, and a friend.
Marie married the love of her life, Walter L. Murray, III, in 1972. Marie and Walter loved to vacation together (mostly to their treasured Maui and Cape Cod), cheer on Boston sports, and enjoy time with family and friends. On the third Saturday of EVERY month, Marie could be found gathering with her cherished “Card Club” friends, a tradition that has lasted 48 years – without fail. Marie loved the holidays and decorating her beautiful home for each holiday and season.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Walter L. Murray, III; her father, Jack E. Long; her mother, Helen G. Long; and her beloved nephew, Jeffrey E. Higgins.
Marie is survived by her sister, Paula J. Higgins and her husband, David, of Scituate; her sister Christine E. Long of Hingham; her niece Brett Marie Ribeiro and her husband, Newiton, and the absolute light of her life, her great nephew, Teo Jeffrey Ribeiro, of Norwell.
Marie is also survived by her life long best friend, Jo-Ann Grew of Scituate; Ann-Margaret Sumnar and her husband, Michael, and their children of Troy, Michigan; and her Goddaughter Andrea Marie Pattison and her husband, Brian, and their son, of Scituate.
Marie also leaves many dear nieces, treasured cousins, and extended family who were all a very important part of her life.
Visitation will take place Sunday., Nov. 26 from 3-7 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Funeral Mass Monday, Nov. 27 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie’s name can be made to the Scituate Food Pantry.
