Janet E. White

Born and raised in Manchester, CT, she was the daughter of George G. and Gertrude (Waddell) Schreiber.

After graduating from high school in 1946, Janet enlisted in the U.S. Navy. She attained the rank of 2nd class petty officer before her honorable discharge.

She then worked for the federal government in Navy Accounts, as a military pay clerk from 1954 to 1961. Moving back to the East Coast, she continued as a federal employee, overseeing government contracts at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in CT until retirement.

After retirement, Janet moved to Scituate, MA, and made many new friends at St Luke’s Episcopal Church and American Legion Post 144.

Janet was a lifelong member of Girl Scout Troop 1 in Manchester. In 1946 she hiked the Long Trail with her fellow scouts. She would later go on to be her daughter, Deborah’s troop leader from 1969 to 1971, in preparation for the European trip.

Janet had many hobbies; reading, knitting, gardening, and a special love for dogs. She leaves behind her beloved Shih Tzu, Molly.

Janet was predeceased by both parents and her stepmother Louise (Demko) Schreiber of Manchester, CT. Also predeceased by her brother Stuart G. Schreiber and his wife Doris of Manchester, and her ex-husband Leonard Q. White of California.

She is survived by her daughter Deborah White-Lyons and son-in-law Joseph R. Foley of Scituate, MA. She is also survived by 2 nephews and 1 niece; James E. Schreiber and wife Jeanette of Orlando, FL, Dr. Alan G. Schreiber and wife Patricia of Alexandria, VA, Carole M. Gilday and husband Matt of Colchester, CT. She had many extended family members throughout the U.S.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, May 31st at the Concordia Lutheran Church, 40 Pitkin Street, Manchester, CT. Interment at East Cemetery, 220 E Center Street, Manchester, CT, followed by a lunch reception at Concordia Lutheran Church. Friends and family are cordially invited.
