Janet was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Texas when she was six. In Texas she learned to drive at the age of 12, was the Queen of the May in high school, and worked her first job earning 9 cents per hour selling a newly-invented product called nylon hosiery at Montgomery Ward. Later, Janet would attend McMurry College and volunteer at the USO where she met her future husband, the late Fred Maloof. Janet lived in Colorado for a short time, and then in New York City, where she enjoyed both opera and Broadway shows.
Married in 1946, Janet and Fred settled in Braintree where she became active in her church and community. She sang in the church choir, was a Camp Fire Girls Leader, and volunteered at South Shore Hospital. She worked for several retailers including Stop and Shop at its headquarters in Quincy.
First and foremost, however, was Janet’s role as loving mother, treasured by her daughter Joanna Maloof of Hingham with whom she lived; her son David Maloof, his wife Deborah, and granddaughter Julia, of Belchertown, MA; and her daughter Paula Maloof of Braintree. Janet is also survived by her sister Doris Weybright of Boise, Idaho, her brother-in-law George Maloof of Marshfield, MA, and her nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Fred, and her daughter Nancy Maloof.
Janet will be remembered by her family and friends for her resilience and gracious bearing. She carried a song in her heart, all of her life, singing in church choirs for 60 years and her whole life at home. Janet was known for her playful wit, delightful smile, and infectious laugh. A lifelong learner, Janet volunteered at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Florida for 15 years and traveled at every opportunity. She loved the adventure of travel, visiting all 50 states in her lifetime as well as Bermuda, Canada, Europe, and Israel.
A Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 11:00 am at the New North Church, 1 Lincoln St. Hingham, MA.
Donations in her memory may be made to: The Etrusco Society, Scituate, MA, or Interfaith Social Services, Quincy, MA.
