Elaine Catherine McLean

Elaine C. McLean, of Scituate, MA, died at the age of eighty-one on February 12, 2022, at South Shore Hospital. She was born in Laconia, NH, daughter of the late Stephen and Katherine (Callahan) Stephens and was raised and educated in Boston and Milton, MA. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury having attended since first grade, where she participated in Student Council and Glee Club, and Emmanuel College in Boston. She attended both schools with her kindest dearest friend Connie Ward. She raised a family of five children and taught at St. Angela’s School in Mattapan as well as worked at the former Baybank.

Elaine loved arts of all kinds. She was an avid painter and worked in several mediums including watercolor and acrylic. Her walls were adorned with a variety of art, both secular and holy. She enjoyed playing the piano and listening to various kinds of music, particularly sacred music. Elaine and her husband Joe enjoyed many outings to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the entire family took pleasure in spreading out a blanket and hearing Boston Pops summer concerts on the Esplanade. She enjoyed art lessons at the Senior Center in Scituate and lately had taken up knitting again.

Most important to Elaine was her family. Summers, when her husband and children were off from school, was the season for family camping trips, museum visits, and times with the extended family. Particularly special to her were days at her parents’ house in Scituate situated right on the water, where she could cool off with a dip in refreshing ocean waters and relax by the waves. She loved the Christmas season with its festive tree, decorations and lights, and she always made sure there were special gifts under the tree. She was a warm-hearted grandmother and never forgot a grandchild’s birthday, sending cards and greetings. She always looked forward to visits from her 5 children and their spouses and her 7 grandchildren as well as her nephews and nieces and their children.

A Scituate resident since 2012, Elaine was a communicant of St. Mary of the Nativity in Scituate; she previously attended Holy Family Church in Rockland and St. Angela’s Parish in Mattapan.

She is survived by her children Joseph Webster (Susan Orr) of Roslindale, Francis V. McLean (Robin) of Tipp City, OH, Elaine C. (Derin) Temel of Westerly, RI, Kathleen M. McLean (Bob) of New Britain, CT and Matthew J. McLean of Merino Valley, CA.

She was the sister of Ellen Stephens of Naples, FL, Katherin Sullivan of Scituate, MA, Marcia Stephens of Pennington, NJ, Jerome Stephens of Scituate, MA and the late Stephen Stephens. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and several nephews.

The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate Elaine’s life at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home at 382 First Parish Road, Scituate on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 4:00-8:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 17th at 9:00am in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
