Dorothy was born on February 26, 1925, in Weymouth MA, the youngest of five children. She was a graduate of Weymouth High School. In her teens, Dorothy volunteered at South Shore Hospital as an aide. After completing exclusive Keypunch training in Boston, she went to work in the office at the Shipyard in Quincy during WWII. She then moved over to Bethlehem Steel, now Hingham Shipyard. She also worked for a time in what is now the Stetson Building, and recalled them making shoes for the Pope, which could only be obtained with ration stamps due to the war.
Dorothy married A. Leslie (Les) Faulkner in fall of 1948, and they settled in Salem, eventually moving to Scituate. They welcomed a son, Scott, born in 1954. They “gained a daughter”, when years later Scott married Sandy (née Vanderpool) in 1984. Dorothy, Les, Scott and Sandy spent many wonderful holidays and vacations together. Dorothy and Les started and ran a student driving school for over 35 years. They taught driving to students in Scituate and the surrounding towns.
Dorothy was a lifelong learner. She enjoyed taking a variety of classes and courses throughout her life, including some at the Senior Center in Scituate. She was also an avid volunteer. She volunteered throughout her life, but, most significantly: Secretary for the Scituate Advisory Committee; Talking Information Center in Marshfield, MA—Reading books and newspapers on the radio for the visually impaired; Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, FL—Usher; and Malpeque Historical Society in Prince Edward Island, Canada—Volunteer.
In retirement, Dorothy and Les spent their winters in West Palm Beach FL, and summers in Prince Edward Island. They travelled abroad in Europe, and enjoyed tours and river cruises. Dorothy also spent time with friends on Cape Cod.
Dorothy’s hobbies and joys included reading, opera, taking classes in arts, crafting, and needlework, trips into Boston Symphony Hall and various Boston theaters to see plays, visits with Sandy, friends (especially the Dwyer family), and neighbors (the Lumnah family, Lisa Rafferty, and Rich & Jeanne Spence), and being involved in her St. Luke’s Community.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Les, her son, Scott, and her siblings, Mary, Nellie, Pauline, and George. She is survived by Sandy Faulkner, Sister-in-Law, Carol Pakalnis of Plymouth, a symphony of nieces and nephews, and a cousin, Marilyn Smith of Sweden, ME.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scituate on Saturday, July 20th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Cudworth Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scituate Senior Center, 333 First Parish Road, Scituate MA 02066.
