Beth Bangs McCabe, 85 passed away peacefully at her Scituate residence on December 6, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 26, 1938 to the late Irvin and Lilith (Hall) Bangs of Machias, Maine, where Beth was raised.
She was a graduate of Machias High School in 1956. Following graduation, Beth moved to Boston to attend the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated from in 1959. Always wanting to further her education, Beth returned to school attending Northeastern University part time from 1976-1985.
As a newly Registered Nurse, Beth first worked at the Joslin Clinic in 1959. In 1960 she started at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she practiced nursing until 1968. After taking some years off to raise her four children, Beth returned to work at North River Nursing Home from 1976-1981.
In 1985, she was a substitute supervisor at the New England Villages Industrial Services. This position was in conjunction with the community health management course of study at Northeastern University. This led to her most beloved job of close to 20 years as the Nursing Consultant at the New England Villages in Pembroke MA from 1986-2004.
Beth volunteered for the South Shore Council Camp Fire Girls from 1968-1980 where she took on a number of roles including Camp Fire Nurse. Beth always brought her children along who enjoyed participating in the activities.
Beth was a Charter Member of the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association. In 1968 she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She cherished her numerous leadership roles in DAR, including serving as Vice-Regent and Regent for the Chief Justice Cushing Chapter of Scituate, MA. Beth remained an active participant in DAR for life.
After her retirement she was actively involved with South Shore Elder Services, serving on the Board of Directors. Beth was also a weekly volunteer at the Scituate Meals on Wheels.
Beth enjoyed history and was an avid reader. She loved the ocean and spent many winters in Marco Island, Florida with her late husband Phil and daughters Beth and Debbie. She enjoyed traveling the world on cruise ships with Phil and later on with their children and grandchildren. A big highlight was their 50th wedding anniversary where they took the entire family on a cruise.
Beth was married to her husband Phil, for 63 years and they raised their four children Cathy, Beth, Debbie and Phil Jr. in Pembroke, MA. They attended St. Thecla's Church for 37 years and in retirement they resided in Scituate, attending St. Mary's Church.
Beth cherished her family and this was demonstrated by the way she loved her children, including her daughter-in-law Marie and son-in-law Richard, who she thought of as her own. Her four grandchildren, Garrett, Leanne, Caitlyn and Mitchell, were the center of her life. She was proud to be their “Nuna” and it meant everything to her to be present at every phase of their lives. Whether at the beach, or overnights at her home, spending quality time with her grandchildren meant everything. Her commitment to family will be one of her many lasting legacies.
She enjoyed the nightly calls from her son and her weekly visits from her daughters to play cards or make jewelry. Beth was known to enjoy a good cup of tea, with a warm Molasses cookie. She never turned down lobster with drawn butter and whenever she had visitors, they could always find a melt in your mouth blueberry cake in the oven, made with love and, of course, wild blueberries from Maine.
Beth is preceded in death by her beloved husband Philip R. McCabe Sr. She is survived by daughters Cathy (McCabe) Mallory & husband Richard G. of Braintree, MA; Beth Anne McCabe & companion Adam Markey of Pembroke, MA, Debra Lea McCabe & companion Walter Ahl (deceased) of Norwell, MA and son Philip R.
