A long time resident of Scituate, MA, Barbara was born on Massachusetts’ North Shore on June 25, 1934 to John and Ethel Horne (née Lord). The first in her family to pursue a college education, Barbara graduated with a degree in Sociology from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA in 1956. She went on to earn a Master's Degree from Bridgewater State Teachers College (now Bridgewater State University) while living on Cape Cod and teaching second grade in Yarmouth, MA. She traveled back and forth to classes in her black 1960 Ford Galaxie.
It was on Cape Cod, at a Halloween party, that she met her future husband, George Angelo Nappa. Married for 32 years, Barbara and George settled in Scituate in 1974 after winterizing their beloved summer cottage. It was a project they worked on together with the skills and talents of family and friends. George “Nippy” passed away in 1994 at the age of 61.
Throughout her life, Barbara was a devoted Roman Catholic. From 2004 until their final lost appeal in 2016, she participated in the Vigil for St. Frances X. Cabrini Church in Scituate. She also volunteered with and traveled with the Foyer of Charity in Scituate through Father Matthew Bradley.
During her long life Barbara explored a number of interests and hobbies as well as working as a teacher, and in joint enterprises with her husband. She was an excellent cook, and her recipes occasionally appeared in local newspaper features. Her interest in traditional homemaking led her to grow her own vegetables, can and preserve, and make wine and limoncello. She also acquired skills in quilting and furniture restoration. Barbara was a great lover of nature and lifelong birder. She had a true interest and ferocity when it came to Boston sports (like every Boston fan) and gloried in the Celtics during Bird’s years, the Patriots during the Brady era, and the Red Sox — when they were winning.
Barbara’s memory and life lessons will live in the hearts of her children Ann Marie Nappa and Lisa Ann Talbot, their spouses Steve W. Kemish and John J. Talbot, her grandchildren Christopher George Talbot, Natalie Elizabeth Talbot, Anna Catherine Lorraine (née Talbot) and Anna’s husband Robert Lorraine, along with nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed many happy holidays and life milestones.
Friends are invited to join the family at a Funeral Mass on Thursday, July 18 at 10:00 am at St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Scituate.
