John was born in Libertyville IL to John F and Nancy (Brewster) Winkelmann on March 11, 1958 and was raised in Mundelein, IL He was active in Scouting and worked hard to become an Eagle Scout. From a very early age, John knew he wanted to be a Marine. He graduated from Carmel High School in 1977 and enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He served in the reserves while attending Marquette University. After graduating with a degree in History and German, he accepted a commission as an officer. He rose to the rank of Captain.
Shortly after his discharge from the military, He moved to New York City and eventually became an insurance adjuster, a career that he loved.
John loved driving and exploring the Northeast while working. He was a voracious reader, enjoyed playing golf, discussing politics and following his Chicago sports teams and the NY Yankees. He was proud of his service to his country and was a Marine in every fiber of his being.
John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jennifer Winkelmann (Vriesman), His mother Nancy Winkelmann (Brewster), his children Sarah (Greg) Kelly, Timothy (Alyssa), Douglas and Peter, his siblings Andrea (Dennis), Lori (Don-deceased) Marcia, Edward (Kristine) and his grandchildren, Quinn, Declan, Cooper, Ava and a grandson due in December. His father, John F Winkelmann, Sr. precedes him in death.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday November 16, 2024 from 12-3:30pm at the Edwin L Bennett Funeral Home in Scarsdale, NY A private funeral service will be held at Greenville Reformed Church with full military honors.
