Elizabeth Keane Fitzpatrick (Betty), a 65 -year resident of the Village of Scarsdale, died peacefully at her home on November 23, 2019. Betty, the oldest of the five Keane siblings who were raised on Park Road in Scarsdale, attended the Yonkers Public schools in her early life before her family moved to Scarsdale. As a child, Betty spent many happy hours in the garden with her beloved father John and playing sports at Our Lady of Lourdes Camp in upstate New York with her beloved sister Nancy.
A graduate of Scarsdale High School, Betty attended Trinity College in Washington, DC. Betty thrived at Trinity, an all-girls Catholic school, where she excelled at mathematics and sports and where she was elected her senior class president. At Trinity she met the love of her life, her future husband Joseph Fitzpatrick, a night law student at Georgetown University who worked in the Patent Office of the United States Department of Justice. They were married at Immaculate Conception in Tuckahoe in 1949 and moved from Washington DC to New York for Joe’s legal practice in 1954.
Betty was an active parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale. She was a Girl Scout leader and school volunteer for many years. She was fiercely devoted to Trinity College and spent many years as a class officer and fund raiser for her alma mater.
Betty’s love of sports continued her entire life. She was an avid tennis and paddle tennis player and for many years captained teams at the Fox Meadow Tennis Club. She was an expert bridge player and relished her bridge games with her mother Helen, her beloved siblings Dick and Susie, and her many beloved friends. A master quilter and cook, Betty’s homemade quilts, jams, sauces, cookies and pickles were coveted gifts for birthdays and holidays.
The biggest love of Betty’s life were her four children and survivors, her daughter Nancy McKenna (Matthew) of Bronxville, her daughter Susan Brennan (Bill) of Orchard Park, NY, her son Christopher of Rutland, VT, and her son Stephen (Megan) of Hartsdale, NY. She was their devoted mother and cheerleader throughout her life and there was nothing too big or too small she would not do for them. Her intense love of family carried over to her 10 surviving grandchildren Kristen Neuwirth, Eileen Stephens, Anne Greisinger, Matthew McKenna, James McKenna, Christine McKenna Roe, Connor McKenna, Rian Fitzpatrick, Kiriann Fitzpatrick, Julia Fitzpatrick and 15 great grandchildren. Up to the last days of her life, Betty could be found enjoying pictures and videos of those great grandchildren and relishing their accomplishments, big and small.
Betty’s family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for Nino Gosiengfiao and Lorna Cerda who faithfully cared for their mom in the final years of her life and for her doctors at Scarsdale Medical Group who did so as well.
A Memorial Wake will be held on Friday, December 6, 2019 from 3-7 PM at Bennett’s Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Avenue, Scarsdale, NY. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, December 7 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Joseph M. and Elizabeth K. Fitzpatrick ‘42 St. Peters Prep Scholarship Fund, 144 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302.
