Harry Norman Manahan

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Norm Manahan, who left us on October 6, 2024 a few weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. Norm is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Patricia Manahan (nee Dolan), and a community of caring friends.

Norm grew up in the east end of Toronto. As a young man Norm was active in the Corpus Christi and St. Brigid’s Young People’s Clubs, where he made a first set of lifelong friends and met Pat. In his early working life, Norm explored a few avenues. He loved to tell the story of his early experience working in the office at a camp for construction of The Radar Line in Northern Ontario for 8 long months. Later he had a long career at the Department of Highways (later the Ministry of Transportation) in Ontario.

In his personal time Norm had a variety of passions. For decades Norm and Pat were active members of competitive tennis clubs and made an expanded set of long-term friends. They loved to travel as a couple and with friends. Norm was a self-taught master woodworker, and many a beautiful piece created in his basement workshop adorned Norm and Pat’s homes in Scarborough. He had a green thumb, and their gardens were lovingly tended. He loved playing bridge and doing puzzles of all kinds. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Toronto Blue Jays. And no description of Norm would be complete without mentioning his always present pipe and flat cap.

Norm will be fondly remembered and held dear in the hearts of his community. Rest in peace.

A Remembrance of Life celebration will be held at Paul O’Connor Funeral Home (1939 Lawrence Avenue East) on Thursday, October 17 from 2-4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Norm may be made to the North York Hospital Foundation.
