It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Donnie….-husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Donnie was “larger than life”. He was someone that people noticed and he had a commanding presence. He was outgoing, knowledgeable and very socialable. He was gentle and kind-just the way his mother raised him.
As many of you know, Donnie was a Master Electrician with many years of employment with Great Lakes as a Lineman and with Littleton Electric…..-following in his father’s footsteps. One of his early endeavours was learning to climb a pole with spurs. Despite sliding down the pole and receiving multiple slivers in his chest, he was not discouraged on becoming an electrician. While doing a wiring job, some 50 years ago, the ladder he was on at the top of the barn broke and he fell resulting in breaking both arms and his leg in several places. This still did not stop him from pursuing his profession or make him afraid of heights. Donnie was a committed and determined person. He continued to be an active part of Littleton Electric until his last days. Greg will certainly miss his expertise and the 4 pm team meeting.
Donnie was surrounded by females all of his life--his three sisters, three daughters and three granddaughters…..Mackenzie, Maya and Sadie. His only grandson, Max, is now following in his footsteps as an electrical apprentice with Littleton Electric. Donnie was very proud of this.
He expected regular visits at cocktail hour and frequently made plans to share meals together. He loved being surrounded by family and friends. Always “the more the merrier”. Not long ago he requested a seafood dinner-one of his favourites. He knew exactly what he wanted, and for a man that never cooked a day in his life, he sure had lots of opinions on how to cook.
He was demanding and loved to be catered to. Nancy took over what his mother started. Nancy you were far too kind and generous to him……-we would have insisted he take out the garbage, unload the dishwasher and pick out his own clothes. On the few occasions he did pick out his own clothes he ended up wearing Nancy’s so maybe it was just as well you did it for him. Nancy he sure loved you and in his last hours he hollered out “Nancy”, as he so often did.
For Helenanne, it was not easy being 13 months younger than him. She remembers the sibling rivalry when they were young but also the support for each other.
Beth had a very close and special relationship with Donnie. Beth recalls many funny stories, one in particular was when Beth was eleven and his mom was away, caring for her mother. At that time Beth was in charge of the meals. When Donnie complained about the quality of the dinner he received bread and water the next day in his lunch. Not too many, other than Beth would get away with that.
Donnie loved to call Sandie “Princess”. Despite the 21 years difference he was always a wonderful, big brother. Sandie loved to give him a kiss and just a couple of weeks ago he said-“kissed by a kid”. Sandie pointed out that he is the only person that refers to her as a kid anymore. A couple of days before his passing he repeated-“kissed by a kid”.
When the grandchildren were young they loved to watch television in his room while he slept. They have many special memories of family trips to Florida and the Caribbean. The family will always cherish the memories of Sunday family dinners.
Donnie loved to travel…… even more than the actual travelling he like to talk about the trip before and after. In particular, he would talked for months with Don Rogers about the plans for hunting on Cockburn Island……… and for months to follow there was the rehashing of their adventures.
There were many wonderful trips and adventures all over Canada and the world. Including Europe with Heather, Nicole and Susan when they were younger. While vacationing he loved to talk to everyone and he would always proudly say he was from St. Joseph Island even though some of the people he was talking with did not even know where Ontario was. But It was also surprising the number of people he would meet who had some connection to the Island.
Donnie enjoyed sharing stories. We would all laugh and laugh over the same old memories. Donnie had an amazing memory-it was hard for him to remember names but he sure remembered details. Often the conversation would be about who lived where, the latest Facebook shenanigans, Island history or hunting and fishing adventures. And of course stories about electrical jobs as it was a huge part of his life.
Donnie fought a good fight over the past four years. In the last several months he had required a lot of personal care. Nurse Nicole went above and beyond the responsibilities of a daughter. Thank you Nicole. This made it possible for him to stay at home, in his own room, doing his best to give orders.
We are all grateful that we were able to spend so much time with him –particularly in the last few week. Many of the family were there when he took his last breath. We are sure he was comforted knowing that so many family, including “his boy” Fred, Heather’s dog, were with him, on his last day. He had a life well lived and he will be sorely missed.
