Rita Engel (nee Schommer) passed away peacefully on August 21, 2016. She was born in 1923 at Leipzig, Saskatchewan and grew up on the Schommer farm near Handel, Saskatchewan. She married Ernest Engel in 1947 and, shortly thereafter, they moved to a farm near Quinton, Saskatchewan. Rita was predeceased by her husband, Ernie, in 1981 and for the next 20 years she ran Engel’s General Store in Quinton. Rita was also predeceased by 2 grandchildren, Gayle Keleman and Mychal Federko and her son-in-law Paul Beingessner, her ten siblings except for Sr. Doreen Schommer, ssnd. She is survived by her nine children, Dona (George) Penkala, Ken (Marg), Jane (Bob) Keleman, Faye Beingessner, Jim (Bernice), Joanne (Mike) Engel-Federko, Ron (Bonnie), Rick (Cindy), Leona (Tim) Lovas and 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Rita lived for the past five years with Ken and Marg in Regina where she spent many hours reading, playing cards and scrabble, working on the newspaper word puzzles and watching the Blue Jays. Vigil for Rita will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24th.The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August, 25th at 11:00 a.m. with Father Steven Bill presiding. Both services will be held at Resurrection Parish (3155 Windsor Park Road). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery Fund, (Quinton, SK), or Regina Palliative Care (1802 McAra Street, Regina, SK S4N 6C4). A private Cremation Rite of Commital will take place at the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery in Quinton.
