It is, with heavy hearts, that the family of Marty Nicholas announce his sudden passing on Sunday March 10, 2024. His last day was one that he would have considered a "best day". He attended the Journey Concert at the SaskTel Centre and went into cardiac arrest while leaving the venue. The man loved music and loved concerts and it seemed so right to have him enjoy one more, one last time.
Marty was born and raised in Saskatoon and lived here his entire life. Throughout his working years, he owned and operated a car dealership, a service station, Special T Recreation and Specialty Yamaha, mostly along with his partner of many years, Dale Badger. He built an incredible customer base that followed him wherever he went and whatever he sold. His last fulltime employment was with a local car dealership. Retirement lasted less than a month and he was hired by Mainline Watrous. He was incredibly happy working with the Management and Staff at Mainline. They allowed him to continue selling to his customers and working from home. The family is beyond grateful to everyone at Mainline for giving him remote access via computer so he could keep doing what he did best and what he loved doing. He was also so proud that he had excellent computer skills even though he was in his 80's.
Marty was also heavily involved with Timmy's Snowarama for many years, serving as a
Director and President. For over 20 years he was a member of the Saskatoon Snowmobile Club, again serving as both a Director and President. His latest and last organization was the Saskatoon Antique Auto Club. Last year was his final year on the executive after serving as Past President. Health issues slowed him down but he still managed to attend 19 car events in 2023, the highlight of his summers. His pride and joy was his 1997 Trans Am, which won him a few awards at various car shows.
Marty led a very full and happy life. He married his high school sweetheart, Dianna Day, and they were married for 20 years. In their 20 years together, they produced four incredible daughters that were deeply loved by both parents. In 1987, Marty married his current wife, Sharon, and they became a blended family with five girls, four from Marty and one from Sharon. Nothing was more important than those girls and all five made him very proud.
The things that our family will miss most about Marty is his kind and generous nature. He was a hands-on dad who tailored his attention to each daughter, his special relationship with Sherri, his firstborn, horses and horse shows with Sandy, swimming and dancing with Shelly, snowmobiling and music with Stephanie, rowing, dancing and car shows with Michelle. His wife will forever miss his love and partnership, she could never imagine a better husband and partner.
Marty is survived by his wife, Sharon, three daughters Sandy (Fino) Nicholas- Grosso, Shelly Nicholas, and Michelle (Ken) Gowans. Grandchildren, Cortnie Matileg, Carsen Matileg, Alex McInnes, Samuel Grosso, Sidney Grosso and Breagha Gowans. He is also survived by his siblings, Howard (Mary) McGregor, Vera Nicholas, Duane (Vivian) Nicholas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marty was predeceased by his parents, Philip Nicholas ad Elva McGregor, former wife, Dianna Day, and his stepmother, Donelda Nicholas, his daughter, Sherri McInnes, his daughter, Stephanie Nicholas, and his granddaughter, Sara Lynn Matileg, his sister, Betty Anne McGregor.
It was Marty's wish to be cremated and we will be having a celebration of this amazing man's life this summer. We will announce at a later date.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in Marty's name, his charity of choice would be Street Cat Rescue and the SPCA. He was a supporter of these two charities for years.
Arrangements entrusted to Derryl Hildebrandt.
