Passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, SK June 25, 2022 after several months of declining health, at the age of 90 years. Rod was born February 13, 1932 in Daugavpils, Latvia. Predeceased by his father, Walfried (Wally), mother, Klara (n. Kanthak), brother Halfton (Alfie), sisters, Valesca (Lessy) Muncs, and Ingrid Otto.
Rod is survived by his loving wife Nora (n. Osborne) of 68 years, and three sons, Warren (Lorrie) and children Rodey (Coral), Jocelyn (Shawn) Radom, Braden, Graham (Joey), Kent (Maxine) and children Monty (Suzanna), Sarah (Jarvis) Olsen, Rachel, and Alexander, Trevor (Heather) and children Aric (Tayne), Alicia (Kevin) Ross, and 19 great grandchildren. Survived also by his sister Gisela (Gisi) Affleck.
Rod’s family emigrated to Canada from a refugee camp in Germany in 1948, by the kindness of friends in the Yorkton, Theodore and Churchbridge area of Saskatchewan. After working on farms in the area, learning the language, and meeting his future wife, Rod trained as a carpenter and spent the rest of his working years in the construction industry.
Rod was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and he shared his love for outdoor pursuits with his family during many camping holidays and ski trips that created fond and lasting memories. He remained a dedicated fisherman, tennis and ping pong player even to his final year.
Rod professed his love for God in his teens and that love became the primary influence in his life – guiding his choices and bringing privileges and blessings that were shared by his family.
The family wishes to thank the palliative care team at St. Paul’s Hospital for their compassion and care. Our deepest appreciation also for all our friends and extended family for their care.
