Mark Richard Mattern was born in Saskatoon on March 20, 1990, to parents Jim and Gail Mattern.
An accomplished cook, he started his career as a teenager and later worked at some of the top restaurants in Saskatoon. He enjoyed all things food, including cooking for friends and family, and growing a vegetable garden. He especially enjoyed coming up with creative new combinations using fresh ingredients.
Mark thrived at physical activities from a young age, playing hockey as a child and winning a provincial championship in high school wrestling. As an adult, he liked longboarding, golfing, dodgeball, bowling and yoga. He loved the mountains, and his adventurous spirit led him on many trips to Alberta and B.C. for snowboarding and sightseeing.
Mark loved a good story, whether in books, video games, theatre, television shows or movies. A music aficionado with a record collection and an ear for underground hip hop, he loved going to Ness Creek Music Festival and the Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival. Having a creative streak himself, he wrote his own poetry and rap songs.
He was also fashionable and knew how to dress sharply with a collection of baseball caps and hats for any occasion.
He cared deeply for his beloved cats, Snickers and Johnson.
His sensitive nature made him a caring friend and a loving family member when he was at his best. “Markis Farkis” was often a goofball and knew how to make people laugh. Conversations with him were always interesting and lively, and will be sorely missed.
Mark is survived by his father and mother; his sister Ashleigh (Jordan); his brother Michael (Lisa) and their children Ethan, Josh, and Katryna; the love of his life, Julie; his grandmother Doris; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his grandfather Doug, grandparents Nick and Annie Denesik, and aunt Violet Streelasky.
All are welcome to Mark’s celebration of life on Friday, April 25, at 1 PM at Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel in Saskatoon. For those unable to attend please follow this link to the livestream page for Mark. https://funeraweb.tv/beloved/179315
